Interesting. Thanks very much for the 'heads up' about this.

I assume that DC is attempting to increase the flagging circulation of its comic book line, in part by trying to appeal to a new generation of readers. And fair enough: I was shocked to see a while back that no single comic book reliably sells even 100,000 copies month-to-month anymore, and only a handful crest 50,000. (Was it really that long ago that "Death of Superman" and :"Spawn" #1 sold in the millions?)

At least we'll also get the long-promised, brand new Wolfman-Perez graphic novel, "Teen Titans: Games" on September 7, the week after this change goes into effect at DC.

Interesting news, and not really that surprising (I wonder if Marvel will eventually do the same thing).

I was just watching a special about the X-Men on a DVD two nights ago, and they were talking about how first McFarlane's Spider-Man sold over a million copies, then Liefield's X-Force sold over two million. Then they did an X-Men #1 (with Jim Lee art) and it sold over 8 million copies! 8O

If DC and Marvel want to increase sales they should go back to using cheap paper, cheap ink, and lower the cost of each book back to traditional levels. A 10 cent comic in 1941 is about $1.40 today. A 35 cent 1978 comicbook would cost about $1.16 today.

I totally and completely agree, bkadams! Alabaster Knight just made an excellent post saying much the same thing over on the Villains and Vigilantes Forum. They don't need to have the expensive paper and printing process; it would be far better to get them back into grocery and drug stores and get the younger generations reading them again. As it is now they're pricing themselves out of the market!

This feels a little like a desperation 'Hail Mary' to me. It brings to mind a quote from John Donne, "Perchance he for whom this bell tolls may be so ill, as that he knows not it tolls for him..."

For a few years now I've begun to doubt that the medium will live to see its 100th anniversary. And I'm afraid that this announcement by DC only increases my pessimism....

There's an article about this on CNN's website this morning (link below). Predictably, it focuses on the re-numbering of all the titles and on the costume re-designs by Jim Lee. But to me, the real long-term impact lies in the move to same-day digital release. That's the change I think heralds the beginning of the end of the paper comic book. (And I also think it bears noting that the 35 cent and 60 cent comic books we used to buy at 7 Eleven at kids were able to priced that low in part because the creative people, including Jack Kirby, were paid so poorly and did not receive health benefits.)

That's wild that they're restarting all the issues with #1. Especially when they've hit #900 with a title. Iron Man has had like five different volumes, but a few months ago they went from #30-something straight to #500 (adding up all of the volumes). How much do you want to bet DC will do the same thing when they get to #1000? (Has anybody ever had an issue #1000?)

It's also interesting that one of their VPs is named Bob Wayne. I wonder if he's related to Bruce? ;)

The beginning of the end.

I mean, once you take away Superman's underpants, what's left?

After finally reading the article, I see that Hawkman is facing a menace that threatens New York City. I wonder if DC is finally going to start using real locations only, and do away with Metropolis, Gotham, etc.?
