Post Banned by Neal Adams!

This is too funny.

As many have no doubt heard, legendary comic book artist Neal Adams has in recent years decided to try his hand at science. Unfortunately he did not want to muck around with that whole taking science classes in college, peer reviewed articles thing and instead decided to hitch his wagon to the 'Expanding earth' hypothesis. Adding to this embarrassment he has opted to insult the half dozen actual geologists and physicists who came to his You Tube channel to address his claims and arguments by calling them "idiots", "lazy" and "dumb".

So little old me...admittedly not a scientist by any stretch (Neither is Neal contrary to recent claims he has made), thought myself relatively safe from Neal's wrath, right?

Wrong! Neal not only went after me and blocked me from commenting at his channel (and before anyone asks, NO...I did not call him names or insult him at all! ) and then set about removing my comments which corrected him on science matters. And for those who might be wondering what I might have said to warrant such, I can't help you because believe it or not I have better sense than to clutter up the MHG site with such off topic stuff.

I hope that when I become a doddering old geezer, I have enough sense not to make a spectacle of myself online.

I probably will, though :)

Well, I think the worst we could reasonably expect from you is seeing pictures of you online in a homemade Gauntlet costume (made of tin foil, discarded thrift store sweaters and brilliantly painted cardboard) LARPing in the park. Compared to what Neal has done that would be like you stumbled on your way to the podium to pick up your Nobel prize. Different scale of 'spectacle' altogether...

Heck! I'm already doing it! And, YOU are older than me!!!... "LORD, HELP US?!!!!"

Still...

Its a blasted shame. I really *LOVE* Neal's artwork. I've been a major fan of his stuff for decades. I rank him right up there with Frazetta, as one of my first/BEST artistic influences. (I can only dream about being HALF as good as he is.) It breaks my heart to see him this way.

*sigh*

Yeah it shocked me as well. But it wasn't just that he was attacking everyone personally. I can handle that to good extent(and dish it out if I feel the need). But it was that he made these bold claims that were so...anti-humble and delusional, posting in all caps to tell us "LEARN THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FACT AND THEORY!11" and claiming that modern geologists are not real scientists but rather high priests in some Church of Scientific Status Quo or some such (somewhat typically his most oft invoked personal attack was to call me and everyone else "religious"), being demonstrably wrong on every count then finishing by banning everyone who disagrees with him, removing their comments and posting insults directed at them in all caps. This is a man who has to be at least 60 years old and he's behaving worse than I do!

I hadn't heard anything about this until now. Amazing.

I checked Wikipedia just now and apparently Neal Adams will be 72 years old in June.

Actually I've known about this for a number of years now.

Apparently, there had been a bit of bad blood between John Byrne and Neal Adams sometime in the past. (I've heard lots of reasons... including that Adams was jealous over Byrne's success at breathing life back into Marvel's X-men title, by doing the exact same things that he intended to do with it... if he had been given a fair chance.) I don't know if it is true or not. But, that was the rumor.
Byrne himself (A stated admirer of Adams' work) poked fun at the whole thing (including Adams' wacked geology theories) by making Adams the villain (Alden Mass, the Messiah) in Fantastic Four #263-264. (The name Alden Maas is an anagram of Neal Adams' name.)
It was a hot buzz topic at the cons, even way back then.

(There was even a bit of an Adams uproar back when the first X-men movie came out. As he was claiming that it was one of HIS old plots, just reworked for the cinema.)

I was a little surprised and shocked by this knowledge. AS I've always been a big fan of Adams', and really loved the work he did on Continuity Comics. *sigh*

Perhaps, THIS is the price for being SO great, for SO long. (Jeff!! Jack!! You've been warned!!!)

John Byrne is also a long time skeptic. He wrote a legendary letter to...either CSIOP or Skeptic Magazine years ago explaining how easy it is to mistakenly see 'amazing predictions/prophecy' in things written. He had a reputation for a while of predicting real world events before they happened (i.e. a cover for Wonder Woman featured a newspaper headline "Princess Diana Dead!" just before you-know-what happened) which was called by many "the Byrne Curse", but as he explains if you are doing hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of comic books, cover art pieces, etc. over the years and you ignore the 99% that do not at all line up with real world events, you will unerringly find some that seem eerie in how they do line up with real world events.

So it would not surprise me if there were some (or a lot of) truth to this.

Personally, I'm as interested in reading Neal Adams' theories on geology as I am in reading comic books illustrated by renowned geologists.

I've never met Neal Adams. So the following assumption on my part is probably unfair. But I don't think this is the 'price' of Neal Adams being 'so great for so long,' but rather a predictable consequence of that (niche) greatness and renown.Neal Adams may be a 'big fish in a little pond.' But, like countless celebrities before him (including Charlie Sheen and Mel Gibson), he may've expounded privately for years about his personal 'theories' on topics far outside the areas that made him famous. And many of the people that surround Neal Adams day-to-day may, while being well meaning, actually submerge him in a warm bath of non-critical sycophancy. As a result, he develops an artificial confidence in some of these 'novel' ideas because they have not been subject to critical analysis. And then he puts them out to the public and....

Just because you can draw a realistic Batman (or Green lantern) doesn't mean you know s**t about geology. Just because you were great in "Wall Street" and "Platoon" in the late 1980s doesn't mean that you have any unique insight into some sort of 'conspiracy' about 9/11 twenty years later...
