Post Joe Singletons Art

I hope Jeff and Jack don't mind me posting this here, but I thought some of you guys would like to take a look at it. Joe Singleton is an artist, writer, and long time gamer (he even played V&V back in the day), and the creator of the online comic Ad Astra. I'm posting some of his work here because 1) it's good, and 2) I like it. First up is a sketch of Joe's old V&V character, Vanguard.

Vanguard
Image

"Originally, this guy was my Villains & Vigilantes character. Of course, his costume was based on Taskmaster and Deathstroke, as the powers I rolled up kinda fit that kind of character. His strength and speed were enhanced with cybernetics, as was his hearing. I had to take a disadvantage, so I made him mute. It made communicating with other characters difficult, so he was pretty much a shoot-first-ask-questions-at-the-autopsy kind of character.

I recently decided to add him to the Young Guns team in my HeroBlog universe, so this drawing, while fairly consistent with the original design, is meant to be the new version. He won't be a mute, this time around, and probably not a cyborg, but I haven't decided, yet.

Originally he carried a Walther P-38, but 9mm is kinda puny against supervillains, so the .44 Automag is a better choice. He carries a light bastard sword, an old Mauser bayonet, a 14-inch buckler and a small arsenal of throwing irons and spikes, as well as a couple of grenades

In the Young Guns, he's going to be a young adult, probably 19 or so."

Here are some mock covers for one of villain groups in Joe's universe, Dynasty. First up is a group shot of the entire group.

Dynasty
Image

"Dynasty is an alternate time-line super-team, in the HeroBlog universe. If the mainstream team Legacy is the Justice League, then Dynasty is the Crime Syndicate.

The front man, there is Abraxas, the second of that name. Behind him, and being inappropriate with a co-worker is Valkyrie. The tiny guy falling from someplace up high is Virus. In the cowl and cape is The Raven. The guy in yellow and black is Overlord, in his time-line, a member of the Overlords, an interstellar group of enforcers, like an evil Green Lantern Corps. The armored guy is Panzer, basically a walking tank. The big guy is Orqa, basically an anthropomorphic killer whale.

Peeking out from behind Orqa is Quickfire, a speedster who literally burns up the road, and snaking her way through the group is the green-skinned Serpentine. She's very stretchy.

It's been awhile since I wrote any HeroBlog stuff, but I'm planning to get back to it, soon."

Next is a cover featuring Overlord.
Image

"It was all going so well.

In just over ten years, Dynasty had risen from a powerful criminal organization to a world power. When, in the early years of the empire, Abraxas had saved the world by destroying a two-mile long asteroid, public opinion had changed and Time Magazine had named him "Man of the Year". Medical innovations pioneered by Raven were making their way into the outside world.

In a few months, their laser launch system in Ecuador will give them access to space.

The empire was weeks away from acceptance into the League of Nations, weeks away from taking its place in the community of nations...

...when the first of Omnedon's scouts appeared in the skies over Earth.
------------------------------------------------
In this mock-issue, Overlord fights off a squadron of advance scouts over coastal Venezuela."

And here's one of Raven and Serpentine
Image

"Raven and Serpentine sneak aboard one of the harvester's mother ships. Serpentine stands guard while Raven hacks the alien computers and download vital data on the interdimensional transporter used by Omnedon's horde. Earth has been made desolate by repeated coronal mass impacts which have torn away much of the atmosphere and killed more than 3 billion people, in the process.

The Earth is lost, they fight only for survival, now"

Here's another piece I really like

Olympia vs. Harpy

Olympia is a member of another group of heroes in Joe's Hero Blog universe, the Valiants.

Here's Thunderstone of the hero group, Seven Sisters.
Image

"So, a long time ago, I came up with an idea for a comic series called Seven Sisters that would have featured the adventures of a group of girls, all half-sisters, whose father was a dead super-hero called Captain Atlas. The idea was, Atlas had donated sperm at some point and it was used to artificially inseminate a number of women so that within a year, seven baby girls were born with superhuman potential.

One of these girls grew to be a body builder and athlete, whose powers slowly made her body as hard and strong as stone. When she began adventuring, she took the name Petra and later, when she defeated a thunder-god avatar in battle and took his magic mallet, she gained storm powers, as well and took to calling herself Thunderstone."

I just love the look of this particular piece.

Hurricane vs. Donar
Image

"In the last days of the Second World War, one heroine, Hurricane, stands alone against Donar, Nazi Germany's deadliest superhuman.
Both are original characters created by me, for a comic series I'll do one day called Gladiators."

The Valiants

Image

"I did this for the restart of my web comic Ad Astra after taking a couple of months off. I was in the middle of a flashback sequence featuring the Valiants and wanted to do the a piece to show the characters as they were when the team formed in 1970."

Image

"Imposter is a major villain of the HeroBlog universe. It's an android of unknown origins that can replicate the appearance of any superhuman and can simulate almost any super-powers.

This is the first time the Valiants encounter Imposter."

Image

"Imposter's true face. He's a shape-shifting, power-replicating android. He's able to mimic most super-powers, but some things, like specific technologies are more difficult to replicate. In those cases, it's better to replicate the individual and use his gear, as in this case where he's infiltrated the Valiants disguised as Hoplite.

To duplicate Hoplite, Imposter must simulate his neuro-muscular profile exactly or the suit will not respond correctly.

Something bad's about to happen to the Valiants."
