Post Tell me about the different versions
on: June 11, 2012, 18:58

Hello there. I'm an older gamer, but I missed out on experiencing the original V&V. I have owned a copy of Living Legends for some time, and I've recently got some interest from friends in playing some Living Legends. This prompted me to do a little investigating into the state of the game, and now I've got some questions. What I would like is for someone to run down the similarities and differences between the current and upcoming systems. Of greatest interest to me is how similar V&V 3.0 would be to LL.

Thanks!

Not very similar at all. LL is a more(in my opinion) elegant design. In LL characters are created using a point-based system(similar to Champions, GURPS etc. in this respect) and the game mechanics are way different. V&V was Jeff and Jack's first attempt at a RPG and with the revised edition(2.0/2.1) became a pretty good game overall(especially for the time it was created). V&V lacked a proper skill system and had (compared to Champions and such) relatively few powers/abilities but was easily 'moddable' and powers could easily be tweaked to achieve most of what any superhero gamer might want to do. V&V had some really great ideas such as being one of the few game systems to take 'size' into account in determining how much someone could lift/carry and how much melee damage they did (Chaosium's games being the others, as well as the first ed. of Twilight 2000).

If you want more in depth information on V&V 3.0 and how it will differ from the older V&V then there are forums here with that information.

Overall I really like Living Legends as a system (probably more so than V&V) but I am in the minority here for whatever reasons. Most here prefer V&V.

Thanks for the reply! I had an opportunity to peruse V&V 2.0 recently, and I can certainly see how it stands as an ancestor to LL, but I have to say that I prefer LL. It just seemed like a really complete, well-thought-out system for doing superhero gaming. I guess I was kind of hoping that V&V 3.0 would be LL with a title change.

Ah well, put me down in the LL camp then.

Having played both games quite a bit, I can tell you that the games are quite different. For me and my group (8 people total right now), we far preferred V&V, and chose to continue playing that game, though we enjoyed LL for a time. LL might do a few things better, but V&V does a better job of capturing the comic book feel, I think. Also, character creation in LL is much more complex. You can do more (get more variety) with LL, but it takes much longer, something that means a lot when you're GMing for a campaign.

V&V GM and player since 1982 (my current campaign is 22 years old); also run West End Games d6 Star Wars monthly, as well as the occasional The One Ring and Marvel Heroic Roleplaying game
